Mount Hakkai (Nyūdō-dake, 1,778 m) is one of the Echigo Sanzan trio (with Naka-no-Dake and Echigo-Komagatake) in Minamiuonuma City, Niigata Prefecture, the highest point being Nyūdō-dake. Its summit ridge is a row of jagged peaks known as the Yatsumine ("Eight Peaks") — Jizō-dake, Marishi-dake and others — linked by exposed chain-secured scrambles. Long revered in Shugendō and served by Hakkai Shrine, the mountain hosts a July climbing-season opening rite and an October fire-walking ritual. It lies within Echigo-Sanzan-Tadami Quasi-National Park; the Hakkaisan Ropeway carries hikers to the 4th station. The peak is listed in the 200 Famous Japanese Mountains.
