千本檜小屋

Mountain hut at about 1,650m on the ridge at the ninth station of Hakkaisan, between Yakushidake and the Yatsumine pinnacles. It is the only staffed hut on this long-venerated sacred peak, with a warden in residence from 1 July to late October and stays strictly by reservation. Ride the Hakkaisan ropeway to the fourth station and it is about 2 hours 20 minutes by way of Nyonindo at the sixth station. The advanced Byobu-do route reaches it in about six hours from the Yamaguchi trailhead, though that route is so steep that descending it is prohibited. From the hut the traverse of the Yatsumine runs on over chains and narrow ledges — one hour to Dainichidake at the tenth station, or by the bypass trail on to Nyudodake, the highest summit. The Hakkaisan emergency shelter, open all year, stands next door.
