Mount Kita
北岳
Minami-Alps, Yamanashi · Elevation 3,193 m
Mount Kita is a 3,193 m peak in Minami-Alps City, Yamanashi Prefecture, the second-highest mountain in Japan after Fuji. It is the principal summit of the Akaishi Mountains (Southern Alps) and the northernmost of the Shirane Sanzan, listed in Fukada Kyūya's Hyakumeizan and the Shin Hana-no-Hyakumeizan. As the centrepiece of Minami-Alps National Park, it presents a sheer eastern face — the Buttress, one of the largest rock walls in Japan — and supports a rich alpine flora that includes Callianthemum hondoense, the endemic Kitadake-sō. The classic route climbs from Hirogawara via the Ōkanbazawa right fork and the Kusasuberi trail to the Kata-no-Koya hut and the summit, while a longer traverse from Kitadake-Sansō hut south to Ainodake and Nōtoridake links all of the Shirane Sanzan. Private vehicles are barred from Hirogawara, so climbers approach via the Minami Alps Forest Road shuttle bus.
