Mount Nōtori
農鳥岳
Hayakawa, Yamanashi · Elevation 3,026 m
Mount Nōtori is a 3,026 m peak straddling Yamanashi Prefecture (Minami-Alps and Hayakawa) and Shizuoka Prefecture (Aoi Ward, Shizuoka City) at the southern end of the Shirane Sanzan triumvirate of Kitadake, Ainodake, and Nōtoridake within the Southern Alps National Park. The name derives from a white bird-shaped snow pattern that appears on its eastern face in late June, traditionally signaling the start of farm work in the valleys below. Listed in the Nihon Nihyaku Meizan, the Yamanashi Hyakumeizan, and the Shin Nihon Hyakumeizan, the ridge walk linking Kitadake, Ainodake, Nishi-Nōtoridake, and Nōtoridake is one of the great traverses of the Southern Alps. The standard direct ascent climbs from Narada in Hayakawa Town via the Daimon-zawa, passing the Daimon-zawa and Nōtori huts to reach the crest — most often walked as the descent leg of the Shirane Sanzan traverse.
