Shigarai Ski Area is a small town-run hill in the former Sawauchi Village, now Nishiwaga, Iwate. Surface lifts serve a short slope with both steep and gentle pitches, so local kids and confident skiers alike can drop in for a few runs. It also has a looped cross-country course that hosts a race every year, and it is the one of Nishiwaga's two town hills that runs night skiing on weekday evenings. There is a lodge, and Sawauchi Baden nearby has food and a hot spring. Deep snow is typical of this heavy-snow town, and the season usually runs from late December to early March.
