Aizu Kogen Daikura Ski Resort is a town-run area tucked into the mountains at Hariu in Minamiaizu, Fukushima. The top reaches 1,200 m, and its east-facing slopes are ringed by 1,000 m peaks that keep the sun off, so the snow stays in good shape. The Daikura slope that gives the area its name drops at up to 38 degrees, joined by short steep pitches such as Shadow and Swing, while easy cruisers like the 1.5 km Shirakaba Out course suit beginners; twelve runs are served by hooded high-speed triples and pair lifts. A kids' park and weekday discount days draw families. It opens from late December to late March, about 80 minutes by car from the Shirakawa or Nishinasuno-Shiobara exits.
