Sakae Club Ski Area trail map
Sakae Club is the village-run ski area of Sakae, the northernmost village in Nagano and one of Japan's snowiest places. It runs on natural snow only, and on weekdays in January and February many runs are left ungroomed, so powder days can be deep. Three pair lifts serve nine runs, from a 34-degree expert pitch to a 2.5 km winding beginner trail from the top, plus a sledding hill for small children. The restaurant serves all-you-can-eat local nozawana pickles, and an onsen is a few minutes away. It lies near the Niigata border, about an hour by car from the Joshinetsu or Kan-etsu expressways.
