Horotachi is a small ski area in Horokanai, Hokkaido, the town that holds Japan's record low of minus 41.2°C, and it is known for the dry, light powder those cold nights produce. One chairlift serves four runs, from a gentle tree-lined beginner course to the 44-degree Horotachi run, and the Shirakaba and Horotachi runs are left ungroomed for powder skiing. It is rarely crowded, and the Horotachi Sanso lodge beside the slope takes overnight guests and training groups. A local NPO runs it, usually from mid-December to late March, about 50 minutes by car from the Asahikawa-Takasu interchange.
