Hokuryu Town Ski Area, a small town-run hill, sits in the Hekisui district of Hokuryu, the Sorachi town best known for its sunflower fields. There is only one run, but both the lift and the car park are free, and the gentle slope suits beginners practising their turns. It opens from around mid-December to early March and stays open into the evening, so locals drop in after school or work. A lodge with drink machines and warm toilets is on site, and the hill is mainly used by local children and families.
