Furen Ski Area is a small city-run family hill in the Furen district of Nayoro, northern Hokkaido. A single rope tow, which you can let go of wherever you like, serves a gentle slope with an average gradient of 11 degrees and a maximum of 17, making it an easy place for children and first-timers to learn skiing or snowboarding. Children up to junior high school ski free, ski and snowboard rental costs nothing, and the slope stays open into the evening, so locals drop by after school or work. There is a small hut, and each February a local sports club holds a ski festival with races and games. The season runs from late December to early March.
