Akagiyama Daiichi Ski Area, at the top of Mount Akagi in Maebashi, Gunma, calls itself the smallest ski area in Japan. About half of its single gentle slope is set aside for sledding, and a snow escalator runs on weekends and holidays, making it a place for toddlers' first sledding and first turns on skis. The snow is all natural, and on weekdays the slope can still be used freely. Akagi was once busy as the closest ski destination to Tokyo, and this small hill is what remains of that history.
