Mt. Umaya
厩岳山
Bandai, Fukushima · Elevation 1,261 m
Mt. Umaya is a 1,261 m peak in Bandai Town (Yama District, Fukushima), one of the outer-rim summits of the Ogunmuma caldera west of Mt. Bandai, lying within Bandai-Asahi National Park. It has long been the center of Bato-Kannon (Horse-headed Kannon) worship in the Aizu region — thirty-three stone Saigoku-Kannon statues line the trail, and a Bato-Kannon hall sits just below the summit. The 1,300-year-old Umayasan Festival opens the climbing season each year, and most ascents now begin near the Eisen Sake Brewery on the south side.
