Mt. Tebako

An 1,806.2-meter peak in Ino Town, Agawa District, Kōchi Prefecture, and (boundary peaks excluded) the highest summit entirely within Kōchi. It sits next to Tsutsujō-yama across the Tebako-goe saddle (1,720 m), where a Shugendō training hall still stands, and the wider area has long been venerated as a mountain practice ground. During the Edo period an ice cellar (himuro) on the mountain stored ice for the Tosa daimyō; the Eurimon community marks this each mid-July with the Himuro Festival, drawing out winter-stored ice, and the stone foundations of the former ice keeper's hut remain on the slope. The round-trip from the Naogawa trailhead takes about six hours; the peak is listed in the Shikoku 100 Famous Mountains and the Bunken Tozan Guide for Kōchi.
