From Tsuchigoya, base for Mount Ishizuchi, the loop climbs Iwaguroyama (1,746 m) with its view of Ishizuchi and passes Marutaki hut to Tebako-goe. It tops Tebakoyama (1,806 m), said to be named for its treasure-box shape and bright with akebono azaleas and rhododendrons, then climbs chained rocky slopes to the grassy dome of Tsutsujozan (1,859 m), returning to Tsuchigoya through mountains dotted with Shugendo halls and shrines.
