A 594 m peak on the border between Shinjo City and Mogami Town in Yamagata Prefecture, just north of the Kamewari Pass that—according to legend—Minamoto no Yoshitsune and Benkei crossed on their flight to Hiraizumi. Trailside sites such as Benkei's Thrown Pine and the Yoshitsune-Benkei Inkstone preserve the legend, and a viewpoint near the summit gives a 360-degree sweep across Mt. Chōkai, Mt. Gassan and the Kamuro range. Three trailheads—Semi Onsen, Yasunba, and Nagao—serve the mountain, one of the Yamagata Hyakumeizan.
