Mt. Sabaneyama is a 178 m hill in Funagata Town, Mogami District, Yamagata Prefecture, crossed by Sabane Pass, once a notorious obstacle on the Ushu Kaido highway. Its summit holds Sabaneyama Jizoson, said to have been enshrined about a thousand years ago and reckoned one of Japan's three great Jizo, revered for matchmaking and the blessing of children. The pass was crossed by figures such as Matsuo Basho and Isabella Bird; today the area is maintained as Sabaneyama Park and the peak is one of the "Yamagata 100 Mountains."
