Aoso-san is a 799.5 m isolated peak southeast of Tōgatta hot spring in Zaō Town, Katta District, Miyagi Prefecture — a small stratovolcano formed roughly 400,000 years ago at the easternmost end of the Zaō volcanic group. Anciently called Ōkarita-san and home to the Karita-mine Shrine on its summit, it has long been venerated as a Shugendō training peak. Together with its neighbour Akera-yama it forms a twin-summit silhouette, and its observation deck commands views over the Zaō range and as far as the Pacific. The Kitaharao trail maintained by the Zaō-Kodō Association leads to the top. It is included in the Tōhoku Hyakumeizan, Michinoku 120 Yama, and the Miyagi prefectural hiking guide.
