Mt. Togamiyama, 402.2 m, rises southwest of central Yamagata City and stands out for its tidy triangular silhouette. During the Keichō Dewa Campaign of 1600 the Uesugi general Naoe Kanetsugu camped on the summit for ten days trying to spy out Yamagata Castle, but haze blocked his view; he is said to have nicknamed the castle Kasumi-jō ('Mist Castle') and the peak Tokami-yama, which evolved into the present 富神山. Three trails — the Shindō, Sannō and Kashiwakura routes — each take 40–45 minutes to the top, and the summit gives wide views of the Zaō range across the Yamagata Basin.
