Mount Shirataka

Shiratakayama (994 m) is the highest peak of the Shirataka Hills, rising on the boundary of Yamanobe Town, Shirataka Town and Nanyo City. The summit holds Fukuman Daikokuzō, one of Japan's five great Kokuzō shrines, and as it sat in the unlucky direction (kimon) of the old Yonezawa domain it was venerated by successive lords — the name of Uesugi Yōzan is said to derive from this mountain. Maintained trails, including the Omote-sandō, 嶽原, Nakayama, Hosono-Hagino and Ohira approaches, lead to the broad summit.
