白鷹山無人休憩舎

Unstaffed rest hut at about 990m near the summit of Mt. Shirataka (also called Kokuzosan, 994m), which rises on the boundary of Yamabe Town, Shirataka Town and Nanyo City in Yamagata. A Kokuzo Bosatsu image is enshrined on the summit, making this a locally revered mountain of faith. The surrounding area is designated by the Forestry Agency as the Shirataka Kokuzosan Scenic Forest, with toilets at three points (summit, Takehara entrance and Makiba entrance) and seven walking and nature-trail courses in and around it. The Takehara trailhead has free parking for eight cars and is about 40-45 minutes by car from Uzen-Yamanobe Station on the JR Aterazawa Line. The site is open 24 hours year-round, but in winter snow is cleared only as far as short of the trailhead, so it is effectively inaccessible. Bears are a concern from April to November, and some trail sections need repair after storm damage.
