From the Katsuragi trailhead in Gose, Nara, the loop climbs through the Katsuragi Highland, where about a million azaleas bloom in May, to 959 m Mount Yamato Katsuragi and its view over the Yamato Plain. It drops to Mizukoshi Pass, climbs Mount Kongo to Katsuragi Shrine, which holds the true summit, Tenporinji, linked to En no Ozunu, and Osaka's highest point, then returns via Seto, about 15 km in all.
