Utatsuyama Ski Area Closed

Official name 卯辰山スキー場

Ishikawa

Opened in 1930

Utatsuyama Ski Area was a slope on Mount Utatsu, the hill rising just east of central Kanazawa, used by the city's residents for skiing. It was cut in 1930 from part of Utatsuyama Park and neighbouring private land, a run about 60 m wide and 350 m long, steep enough to carry a ski jump; a girls' school diary from that winter records pupils skiing and throwing snowballs there. The ski area later closed, and in 1993 Kanazawa city replanted the former slope as the park's flowering-shrub garden, with about 8,000 azaleas that bloom from late April to early May.
