Kuriko International sits in the Itaya district of Yonezawa, right where National Route 13 leaves the Higashi-Kuriko tunnel, which made it one of the easiest areas in the region to drive to. Opened in 1967, it offered six runs, from a gentle roundabout trail to the steep Rainbow run dropping straight to the base, plus a terrain park and the slope-side Hotel Valley Blanche; visits peaked at over 230,000 in 1991. After operator bankruptcies, poor snow, reputational damage from the Fukushima nuclear accident and a lack of money for lift repairs, it has been closed for business since the 2016-17 season.
