Yufudake (East Peak)

The east peak of Yufudake in Yufu, Oita Prefecture, stands 1580 m high. The twin-summited mountain is called Bungo-Fuji for its majestic shape. The east peak is 20 minutes from the Matae saddle; the west peak approach has dangerous chains. Kyushu azaleas grow around the east peak, which offers broad views. The roughly 90-minute circuit around both peaks has loose rocks and difficult sections suited to experienced walkers. It lies in Aso-Kuju National Park.
