Mt. Tenranzan
天覧山
Hannō, Saitama · Elevation 197 m
Mt. Tenranzan, 197 m, rises at the northwestern edge of central Hannō on the eastern fringe of the Okumusashi range, and in 1922 was designated Saitama Prefecture's first scenic site (名勝). Originally called Atagoyama and later Rakanzan after sixteen arhat statues donated by Keishōin, mother of shogun Tokugawa Tsunayoshi, the peak took its present name when Emperor Meiji watched Imperial Guard manoeuvres from the summit on 18 April 1883. A 20-minute climb from Ninnji Temple opens onto wide views of the Kantō Plain — Tokyo Skytree, the Okutama and Okumusashi ranges, and Mt. Fuji on clear days — making it one of the metropolitan area's most popular beginner hikes and a fixture in many Kantō low-mountain guidebooks.
