Mt. Tenjin

Tenjinyama is a 455.3 m peak above the Hase district of Sakurai City, Nara, also known as Yokiyama. Its lower slope holds Yoki Tenmangū, said to be Japan's oldest Tenmangū shrine, founded in legend in 946 when Sugawara no Michizane descended beneath a giant pine on the mountain. Because the slopes were the sacred grove of Hasedera (Saigoku Kannon No. 8) and logging was prohibited, the dense evergreen broad-leaved forest of pasania and oak has survived intact and is now protected as the nationally designated Yokiyama Warm-temperate Forest natural monument. The peak is reached as a return walk from Hase, and is included in the Nara Hyakuyūzan list.
