Amanokaguyama is a 152.4 m hill on the southeast edge of Kashihara City, Nara — together with Unebiyama and Miminashiyama it forms the Yamato Sanzan, the three classical hills of the ancient capital, designated as a National Place of Scenic Beauty in 2005. The Man'yōshū sings of it as Ama no Kaguyama, "the Heavenly Kaguyama," said to have descended from the sky, and it is the setting of Emperor Jomei's kunimi poem and of Empress Jitō's famous verse on summer drying robes on its slopes. Three shrines — Ama-no-Iwato, Ama-no-Kagu and Kunitokotachi — sit on the mountain, whose hard diorite-gabbro core has resisted erosion better than the surrounding plain, leaving the gentle dome that gives the hill its name.
