Mt. Sakado
坂戸山
Minamiuonuma, Niigata · Elevation 634 m
A 634 m hill rising over Minamiuonuma City in Niigata that carries on its summit the remains of Sakado Castle, a Sengoku-period stronghold of Nagao Masakage and Uesugi Kagekatsu now designated a National Historic Site. From base to top the spring slopes are filled with katakuri, anemone, iwakagami, and cherry blossom in turn, earning it a place among the Hana no Gojū Meizan (50 Flower Mountains). Several well-maintained trails, principally the Yakushi-one ridge route, climb the peak in around 1.5 hours from a trailhead within walking distance of Muikamachi Station. The summit opens to climbers each year on 30 June.
