Hachimori-yama (2,447 m) sits at the meeting point of Matsumoto City, Asahi Village and Kiso Village in central Nagano, the southernmost peak of the Hida Range and a principal headwater of the Kiso River. It is included in the 300 Famous Mountains, the 100 Mountains of First-Class Triangulation Points and the 100 Famous Mountains of Shinshū. The rounded "piled-bowl" silhouette gives the mountain its name, and Veitch's silver fir and spruce form a dark coniferous belt along the summit ridge. Today only the Asahi Village trail is open: climbers must apply at the Asahi Village Tourism Association during the official season (roughly mid-June through late October) and pick up the key to the gated forest road.
