Mt. Gobanishiyama

Gobanishi-yama is a 1,189.4 m peak in Shitara Town, Kita-Shitara District, Aichi Prefecture, and one of the Eight Famous Peaks of Oku-Mikawa. It has been climbed since the Kamakura period as a sacred mountain for yamabushi ascetics, and the slopes hold the namesake "Goban-ishi" (Go-board) rock alongside other formations such as Fujimi Rock and Shichihiro Rock, plus the scenic Tengu's Garden lookout. Local legend tells of a tengu who played go against a villager for seven days and nights, then flipped the board in anger after losing. On clear days Mt. Fuji is visible from Fujimi Rock. The peak is also listed in the 130 Mountains of Aichi and the Tokai-area weekend best 120.
