Araragi Kogen Ski Area is in Namiai, Achi Village, in southern Nagano, beside National Route 153. It opened in 1989 at the height of the ski boom, with about 21 hectares of slopes: a beginner lower area and an intermediate upper area served by a quad and a pair lift, plus a snow park with kickers and rails, a sledding area and night-skiing lights, and with snowboarding allowed it was aimed mainly at young people. Falling visitor numbers, warm winters and rising fuel costs led the operator to suspend operations from the 2018-19 season, and no reopening has been announced since.
