Mount Sarumasa is a 1,267-meter peak straddling the border between Okuizumo Town (Shimane, Nita District) and Takano-chō in Shōbara City (Hiroshima), and is regarded as the highest summit of the Izumo region. Recorded as "Misaka-yama" in the eighth-century Izumo Fudoki, the mountain is today designated as a natural forest preserve by Shimane Prefecture, with old-growth beech and horse chestnut sheltering Asian black bears and rare plant species. The trail is rugged and unmaintained — climbing from the Hiroshima side is currently prohibited — and the peak is featured in the Chūgoku Hyakumeizan and Hiroshima Hyakuzan lists.
