Azumayama is a 1,239 m peak straddling the boundary between Okuizumo Town in Shimane Prefecture and Shōbara City in Hiroshima Prefecture, and the principal summit of the Hiba Range. Its broad summit meadows — Daizenbara on the Shimane side and Ikenohara on the Hiroshima side — alternate beech and Mongolian-oak parkland with basaltic outcrops, azaleas, and pampas grass, offering some of the Chūgoku region's finest gentle-mountain walking. Tradition holds that the deity Izanagi-no-Mikoto, calling out "Aa, waga tsuma yo" toward his entombed wife Izanami on neighbouring Hibayama, gave the peak its name. The mountain lies within Hiba-Dōgo-Taishaku Quasi-National Park and is listed in the Japanese 300 Famous Mountains and the Chūgoku 100, among others.
