Mount Raiden

Mount Raiden is a 1,211.3 m Quaternary stratovolcano on the boundary between Iwanai Town and Rankoshi Town in Hokkaido, marking the western end of the Niseko range. Composed of andesite and active from roughly 1.4 million to 800,000 years ago, the summit bears a first-class triangulation point named 'Raiden-dake' and the prominent Tengu-iwa boulder. Alpine flower fields spread on the southern slope, and the summit looks out to Mounts Chisenupuri, Annupuri, and Yōtei to the east, and over the Sea of Japan, Lake Kokkuri, and the distant Mount Kariba to the west. The mountain lies within Niseko-Shakotan-Otaru Kaigan Quasi-National Park, and the traverse from Asahi Onsen takes about six hours one way. It is one of the 100 Famous Mountains of Hokkaido.
