Mount Kayagatake is a 1,704 m volcanic mountain on the boundary of Hokuto and Kai cities in Yamanashi Prefecture, at the southwestern edge of the Okuchichibu Mountains and south of Yatsugatake. Together with neighbouring Kanagatake (1,764 m), its resemblance to Yatsugatake has earned it the nickname Nise-Yatsu. The writer and mountaineer Kyuya Fukada died near the summit in 1971; a monument at Fukada Memorial Park bears his words “a hundred summits, a hundred joys.” The summit overlooks Mount Fuji, the Southern Alps, Yatsugatake, the Northern Alps and Okuchichibu. Day routes include an out-and-back from Fukada Memorial Park and a circuit from Akeno Fureai-no-Sato via Kanagatake. The hiking season is mid-April to mid-November.
