Nishiho Hut

A mountain lodge at 2,367m at the south-western end of the Hotaka range, the base for climbing Nishihotakadake (2,909m). It stands on the ridge about an hour and a half up a forest trail from the top station of the Shinhotaka ropeway, and is known as the only hut in the southern Northern Alps that stays open all year, every day. The main building holds the guest rooms; an annexe joined by a covered corridor houses the shop, café and common room, where the house speciality — Nishiho ramen — and curry are served. Rooms are tatami-floored, from six to fourteen mats, shared as a rule, with private rooms available. In summer Toho University's medical faculty runs a clinic in a building of its own, and the manager gives weather classes and lectures. Winter brings Christmas, New Year, Setsubun and Hinamatsuri events, and this is one of the few places from which to see the Hotaka range at the depth of the season. The toilets have been rebuilt to an environmentally sound design; non-guests pay 100 yen a use.
