破風山避難小屋

Unstaffed emergency shelter at about 2,080m at Sasadaira, the open saddle between Tokusayama and Nishi-Hafusan on the main Okuchichibu ridge in Chichibu-Tama-Kai National Park. It is managed by Saitama Prefecture's Chichibu Environmental Management Office. The Okuchichibu traverse that follows this ridge is designated in the park plan as the Okuchichibu traverse trail from Kumotoriyama to Kinpusan, and the hut sits on the stretch running from Karisaka Pass toward Kobushigatake. The western side of Nishi-Hafusan (2,318m) is a steep rocky slope, slippery when frosted and exposed to strong winds off the Chichibu side. Much of the main ridge, including the ground around the hut, is a special protection zone under the Natural Parks Act: felling or damaging trees is forbidden, and even gathering fallen branches or leaves requires permission, so the Ministry of the Environment asks visitors not to collect deadfall around the hut. It also asks that the shelter be treated as a place to escape trouble temporarily — no planned overnight stays, no monopolising it, and give way to anyone arriving in an emergency. There is no ordinary route straight up Hafusan; Yamanashi City describes an approach from Michi-no-Eki Mitomi via either Karisaka Pass or this shelter, rated 5 for fitness and B for difficulty. It was also here, in late July 1916, that a party of five led by Tokyo Imperial University students lost the trail on Hafusan while attempting the traverse from Karisaka Pass to Kinpusan, and four died in a storm.
