雁坂小屋
1,956 m · Chichibu, Saitama · 1.3 km from the summit of Mount Karisaka-rei
Blue-roofed hut at 1,955m in the Okuchichibu mountains, about ten minutes down the Saitama side from Karisaka Pass (2,082m), where the old Chichibu-Okan road crosses the main ridge traverse and which ranks with Harinoki and Sanpuku among Japan's three great passes. From Saitama you take a bus to Kawamata via Seibu-Chichibu and Mitsumineguchi and climb the Tsukidashi Pass route; from Yamanashi you come up from Michi-no-Eki Mitomi or Shinjidaira over Karisaka or Kari Pass. The building was rebuilt in 1967 as the mountaineering-event lodging for the 22nd Saitama National Sports Festival. Stays are room-only for 24 people, by reservation; of the three-tier bunks either side of the aisle, the bottom tier has curtains that turn it into something like a private cubicle. Water is piped a kilometre from the Mamayaki stream and has passed health-authority testing — passing hikers may use it for a donation of 100 yen or more. The campsite takes 30 tents and needs no booking. The keeper is mostly present at weekends, and the earth-floored part of the sleeping building stays open even when nobody is in: an old-fashioned, quiet mountain hut.
2026: open April 29–November 23 · reservation required · sleeps 24
