Takayanagi Garuru is the only ski area in Kashiwazaki city, a small hill in the rural Takayanagi district run as part of Niigata Prefecture's Kodomo Shizen Okoku children's centre. A single 424 m pair lift serves one gentle slope averaging about 10 degrees, with a separate sledding area and a ski kindergarten for little ones, so it suits families putting children on skis for the first time; snowboards are allowed everywhere. The season usually runs from early January to mid-March. It is about 30 minutes by car from the Kashiwazaki interchange, and the children's centre five minutes away has hot baths and family lodging.
