Takano Kogen Ski Area Closed

Official name 高野高原スキー場

Hiroshima

Closed in 2012

Takano Kogen was a small municipal ski area in the Takano district of Shobara, Hiroshima. Local volunteers built it in the early 1970s, starting with a home-made rope tow driven by a truck engine; it later passed from the ski club to Takano town and gained a T-bar lift. After the town merged into Shobara it remained the city's only municipal ski area. Falling visitor numbers and rising maintenance costs led the city to close it in March 2012, after about 40 years.
