Makino Kougen Family Ski trail map
Makino Kougen is a broad snowfield at the foot of Mt Akasaka in Takashima, now run as a family snow area for small children. There are no chairlifts, just a gentle slope served by a 100 m moving walkway, which makes it a good place for sledding and a first day on skis. A snowmobile-towed banana boat, snowshoe rental and trailheads for snowshoe hikes up Akasaka and Otani add variety, and the Sarasa day onsen stands right next to the slope. Skiing here dates back to the early Showa era, when the area also had lifts. It is an easy drive from the Kyoto area, with buses from JR Makino station.
