Yamamotoyama is a 337 m hill in Ojiya City, Niigata, whose summit opens out as the Yamamotoyama Plateau. It looks across to the Echigo Sanzan and the distant mountains of Aizu, with the Shinano River and the Niigata plain below. Mist forms readily here, so autumn mornings bring seas of cloud, cloud waterfalls and Brocken spectres, and from mid to late September it is one of eastern Japan's foremost places to watch grey-faced buzzards and honey buzzards on migration. Fields of rape blossom, sunflowers and buckwheat colour the seasons, and a road runs all the way to the summit.
