Mount Shōwa-shinzan is an 402 m active volcano in Sōbetsu Town, Hokkaido — a rare belonite-type (uplift) volcano formed between 1943 and 1945 when a wheat field rose during a parasitic eruption of nearby Mount Usu. The site was designated a Special Natural Monument of Japan in 1957, and reddish-brown lava towers still emit steam from its summit. The mountain is privately owned and closed to unrestricted entry, but it can be viewed from the adjacent Mount Usu Ropeway, and the diary-style records of its growth kept by postmaster Masao Mimatsu — the 'Mimatsu Diagram' — became internationally famous. It lies within Shikotsu-Tōya National Park and the UNESCO Toya-Caldera and Usu Volcano Global Geopark. Guided climbs are available with special permission.
