Shimohiruzen is a 1,100.4 m peak straddling Kurayoshi City (Tottori) and Maniwa City (Okayama), the easternmost of the 'Hiruzen Sanza' trio together with Naka-Hiruzen and Kami-Hiruzen. The whole range lies within Daisen-Oki National Park, and the trail is famed for its colonies of dogtooth violets (katakuri) blooming from late April into early May. Though the lowest of the three peaks, the summit offers what many consider the finest panorama of the trio—a 360-degree view taking in Mt. Daisen, the other Hiruzen peaks, the Hiruzen Highlands and the Sea of Japan. From the Shimohiruzen trailhead at Inubasami Pass the climb via Kumoidaira takes about ninety minutes. The peak is included in the Okayama Prefecture Hyakumeizan, the Chūgoku Region 100 Mountains and other regional lists.
