Mt. Shimogongendō

Mt. Shimogongendō is an 897 m peak in Uonuma City, Niigata Prefecture, collectively called "Gongendō-yama" together with neighboring Mt. Kamigongendō (998 m) to the northwest. The summit commands views of the Echigo-Sanzan, Mt. Asakusa, Mt. Sumon and other famous Echigo peaks, and is admired for azaleas and rhododendrons in June and brilliant autumn foliage. Togakushi Shrine, founded in 1583, sits at its base and hosts the annual mountain-opening ceremony on the first Sunday of June. The peak is featured in the Niigata Prefecture Mountain Guide.
