Mt. Okina (1,075 m) rises on the border between Obanazawa City in Yamagata Prefecture and Kami Town in Miyagi Prefecture, and is included in the Yamagata 100, Tōhoku 100 and Japan 100 Low-Famous Mountains lists. According to tradition the name commemorates an old man — a messenger of Kasuga Daimyōjin — who saved a white deer here, and a small shrine and triangulation point still mark the summit. The standard route climbs through beech forest from the Okina-yama emergency hut (Harima Hut) on the Obanazawa side in about an hour and a half, with an optional loop via Mt. Kurokura passing waterfalls and flower meadows.
