Mt. Kaundake

Mt. Kaundake is a 1,954.5-meter peak straddling the boundary between Biei Town and Shintoku Town in Kamikawa District, Hokkaido. Standing near the center of the front Daisetsu range, it is nicknamed "the navel of Daisetsu" and lies within Daisetsuzan National Park. Its southeastern slopes hold the celebrated alpine flower meadow "Kami-asobi no Niwa" ("garden where the gods play"). The peak is a waypoint on the long traverse linking Asahidake and Tomuraushi, and is most commonly approached from Tenninkyo Onsen in Higashikawa Town via an 11-kilometer trail of roughly seven hours.
