Mt. Iwara
井原山
Saga, Saga / Itoshima, Fukuoka · Elevation 982 m
Mt. Iwara (982 m) is the second-highest peak of the Sefuri Range, rising on the border of Itoshima City in Fukuoka and Saga City in Saga. As a fault-block summit it falls away in steep cliffs on the Fukuoka side, cradling deep valleys with waterfalls such as Arai-tani and Mizunashi-tani. Its grassy summit gives a 360-degree panorama and is famous for early-May Kobanomitsuba azaleas and the great drifts of orange ōkitsunenokamisori (spider lilies) that bloom in mid-July to early August. Trails climb from the Mizunashi and Zuibaiji-Kitoku-bashi trailheads in Itoshima, often combined with neighbouring Mt. Raizan, and the peak is counted among the 100 Famous Mountains of Kyūshū.
