Mt. Hōshu (559 m) is the southernmost peak of the Gozu range, rising on the border between Agano City and Gosen City in Niigata Prefecture, and is included in the New Niigata 100 Famous Mountains list. The name refers to the flame-shaped Buddhist jewel (hōshu) that the summit profile resembles. The view from the top opens over the Kanbara Plain, Sado Island in the Sea of Japan and the mountains of the Aizu region of Fukushima Prefecture; the Akamatsuyama Course and Ishima Course are the most-used routes for local Agano-City hikers.
