Mount Gozu

Mount Gozu is a 912.5 m peak on the border between Agano City and Aga Town in Niigata, the principal summit of the Gozu range. The name reflects its crown of five peaks, and tradition holds that Kūkai opened the mountain to worship in 809; the western flank facing Agano is known as Omote-Gozu and the eastern flank facing Aga as Ura-Gozu. The range was designated as the Gozu Prefectural Natural Park in 1959 and the Gozu Natural Recreation Forest in 1975, and an opening ceremony (yamabiraki) takes place each year on 3 May. Praised as "moderately low and moderately steep," it is a favourite training ground for Niigata climbers and features in Hana no Hyakumeizan and Niigata 100 Meizan.
